Ransomeware such as Locky or Jigsaw can cause great damage to companies – are you adequately protected? What makes malware from the Internet particularly dangerous is that it is increasingly camouflaged and thus increasingly reaches end devices and data carriers unnoticed; to infect the entire IT infrastructure. Companies need an effective filter service, which is preferably a combination of virus protection program and spam filter and works depending on their own IT infrastructure: keyword cloud software. In this guide, we will show you what makes a good filter service for companies.

1. The cloud quarantine: Even in 2016, perfect computer protection that comprehensively and immediately blocks every virus is still a long way off. Nevertheless, there are intelligent solutions that rely not only on algorithms, but also on particularly secure processes, thus eliminating many risks from the outset. Behind the SecuMail^® filter service, for example, there are various security mechanisms that have been proven and developed in practice to protect you from most of the threats that companies receive via email. An example of this would be the so-called “temporary storage” of suspicious e-mails, which are only forwarded when a certain time has elapsed and the filter system has found the document to be safe.
2. Blocking infected emails: If the filter service determines after the cloud quarantine mentioned above – or even directly – that it is an infected email, it should be blocked immediately. It is not advisable to clean the e-mail – “purges” are very insecure. If an email was infected, it has no place in the recipient’s mailbox even without a file attachment.
3. Low setup effort for the user: Setting up the filter service should require little effort – cloud services have a clear advantage here as well. 4. Reliable and understandable security reports: A good filtering service should also provide the user with an automatic daily overview of which suspicious emails and file attachments have been blocked and quarantined.
5. Easy handling: The prerequisite for a high level of security is above all simplicity. You and your employees as users must not be able to do anything wrong with a high-quality filter service, even unconsciously, so as not to endanger your own safety. Every e-mail that accesses the mailbox must first be automatically classified by the system, without giving the user a choice in advance. This is for your own protection. This also includes the blanket blocking of insecure file formats such as .doc documents, which are often used by criminals to hide malware in them. More on this in point 8.
6. A low false positive rate: You are certainly familiar with the term “false alarm”. A good filtering service has a very low error rate, so that you and your employees are not deprived of important, clean emails. 7. The filter service should be hosted in Germany: Business e-mails in particular are highly sensitive in parts and require discreet handling. Data protection regulations do the rest. To ensure security here as well, your filter service should also be hosted in Germany.
8. Blanket blocking of unsafe and outdated file formats: There are file types that are known to “transport” Trojans like Locky. Files such as .js or .doc should therefore be blocked across the board. A current wave of viruses is also coming via JSE files. These should therefore also be subjected to a fundamental blockade.
