SecuMail® improves virus and malware protection

Dear customers and partners,

We are pleased to inform you that we have been able to significantly increase the filter performance of our spam and virus filter SecuMail® in terms of virus and malware protection.

One of the two scanner engines that has provided antivirus protection for many years has been replaced by a new and more powerful one. SecuMail® has now integrated scanner engines from the manufacturers Avast and Clamav. The previous scanner FProt will soon be phased out and will run as the third scanner until then.

The adaptation of the scanner had become necessary due to the changing requirements. Currently, attempts are being made in particular to reload malicious code via macros in various Office file formats and to exploit security vulnerabilities in the respective Office programs (such as Tesla-Crypt is currently the case). For example, a good 90% of the viruses discovered by SecuMail® in the last few days are classified as “VBA downloaders” in scanned emails. This makes the fingerprint of the malicious code much smaller and more difficult to identify.

The selection of the new engine was based on findings on:
– scanner performance for current email malware and viruses
– technical integrability
– scan speed
– budget

The new software (Avast) currently fulfills this requirement by far the best, so we expect a noticeable increase in the performance of the SecuMail® spam and virus filter. In particular, our laboratory tests show that new viruses or their mutations are now detected much more quickly.

If you have any questions about SecuMail®(r) or security in general, please do not hesitate to contact us: secumail@wor.net or by phone at: 08171-246920
