Ransomware causes critical load spikes
Extreme malware waves put up to ten times the load on your mail servers. An infected e-mail rarely comes alone and is mainly sent by infected computers. The more people get infected, the more malware is sent until the wave subsides at the end of the day.
The blue line in the graph represents the delivery attempts by ransomware, while the green area shows the unblocked, desired email traffic. The unrainy blue peaks catch the eye, which are exclusively due to unwanted e-mails.
What you need to consider when dimensioning your mail servers:
Plan with a multiple of your own predicted workload so that these peaks do not regularly overload your systems.
Or switch on an MX-based filtering service that filters out both unwanted or dangerous e-mails and overload situations before they reach your systems.
