In the last few days, two major acquisitions in the hosting industry have become known:

• The US domain hoster GoDaddy acquires HostEurope
• United Internet acquires Strato from Telekom

This means that the concentration in the hosting market continues to increase. A large number of well-known brands are thus effectively controlled by two companies:

• 1&1, 1&1 Versatel, united-domains, InternetX, Arsys, GMX and Web.de (United Internet)

Both takeovers are still subject to antitrust review. The trend among the “big ones” is clearly towards mass hosting.
